Your car is nothing without its wheels. Wheels are a defining characteristic of all cars and allow a vehicle to drive smoothly. Your wheels are not only for their aesthetic appearance, they play a vital function in how your car drives. They have many sizes and styles available for passenger cars and commercial vehicles. Wheels provide two uses; they reduce friction, and they provide leverage. The rim is an important part of the wheel because it rotates around rods that are called axles. The friction provided by the tire contacting the pavement is necessary to turn the wheels and help the vehicle move along. 

Components of a Wheel

• Outboard face: The main face of the wheel that makes up the design you see on your vehicle and provides a structure for the wheel. 

• Center bore: An empty hole in the center of the wheel, usually covered by a cap with the manufacturer’s logo.

• Plate: Contains the bolt holes for the lugs that bolts to the wheel hub.

• Spokes: Connect from the plate to the edge of the rim and plays a large part in determining the weight and strength of a wheel.

• Rim: Outer diameter of the wheel.

• Bolt circle: The circle that is created by the centers of the bolt holes, where the lugs affix the wheel to the hub.

• Valve stem bore: Hole that allows air to be added to the tire.
